We cover a broad range of topics all centered on the main theme of why your gym climbing doesn’t always translate to your outdoor climbing:

  • Bolts are further apart / bigger fall potentials

  • Different types of rock you’re not used to

  • Body positions that we don’t see much in a gym

  • What skills and strengths are required to climb harder grades

Karly talks about ways to manage your fears and exactly what might be holding you back in your strength repertoire to climbing harder things, such as…

  • Shoulder engagement

  • Fewer points of contact on the wall

  • Movement patterns on harder climbs

Ice Ice Beta Podcast, October 2023

In this episode with Patrick Cooke, we talk about progressing in ice climbing with longevity in mind, mental training, and balancing mentorship with figuring things out for yourself.

Patrick is based in the Northeast and has been climbing for nearly 20 years. During that time he has ticked hard classics all over New England, the Canadian Rockies, Québec, Scotland, and Hyalite Canyon.

Some of his proud sends include Call of the Wild at Lake Willoughby in Vermont. Omega at Cannon Cliff in New Hampshire, and he was part of the first free ascent team for The Resistance, a 5-pitch M10 on Mount Washington in New Hampshire.

Patrick is especially drawn to thin technical routes, weird mixed lines, and has begun to embrace more sport-styled mixed climbing over the past few years. In his coaching, he focuses on headgame and decision making in the mountains.
